OVERVIEW

An aristocratic country retreat, this elegant villa is set within a picturesque park with mature trees, a 40-minute drive from Bologna. Originally built in the 16th century and designed in the Neoclassical style, the refined villa has been beautifully restored and boasts recently refurbished bedrooms and all-new bathrooms.

Arriving via a regal tree-lined avenue, you are met by the gracious villa with its top floor columned loggia. This loggia has an open-air sitting area.

Other living and dining areas are spread around the flat, manicured gardens. The extra-large pool is bordered by sun loungers and a canopied sunbed where you can relax in the afternoons.

With Murano chandeliers, historical paintings, wall frescoes, and dark wood antiques, the villa’s interiors are both grand and intimate. Guests can gather indoors in the main living room, small drawing room, cozy TV room, or family/games room. There’s a large country kitchen with wooden beams and a fireplace next to which is the breakfast room. Guests can enjoy meals in the formal dining room or two outdoor dining terraces.

The villa’s 7 bedrooms are spread over the first and second floors and have lovely views over the bucolic grounds. These are all uniquely decorated with different color schemes; some have Toile de Jouy fabrics, while others have delicately painted ceilings. Their matching en-suite bathrooms have been entirely refitted with luxurious wash basins, large showers, and some with soaking tubs.

There is a inviting restaurant at the edge of the estate, for easy dining beyond the villa. The surrounding region is one of Italy’s top gastronomic regions, so you can do a wide range of food-related visits (ham and cheese producers) and dine at some of Italy’s top restaurants. Other great excursions include sightseeing in Bologna, meandering through the historic Margherita Gardens, or discovering Italy’s automobile heritage at the Ducati Museum.

  • The castle called “Rocchetta Mattei” gets its name from the earl Cesare Mattei (1809-1896) who built it on the ruins of an ancient building dated back to the 13th century, called Rocca di Savignano. The structure of the castle had been repeatedly modified by the earl and his heirs, so that it became a maze of towers, monumental stairways, reception rooms, and private chambers. They all evoke different styles: from neo-medieval to Neo-Reinassance, from Moorish to Liberty. It is possible to tour the castle lead by a guide that will take the small group to discover of the wonders of the castle.
  • Bologna. City of art, culture and commerce, with a streamlined trade-fair organization and a well-known manufacturing and motor tradition, Bologna is famous for its almost 40 km of arcades, the longest in the world, recently named a UNESCO Heritage Site.
  • Also called “The Learned” for its old University, and “The Fat” for its food tradition, the city is also a “UNESCO creative City of Music” and has one of the largest and most well-preserved medieval historical centres, full of restaurants, taverns, theatres and shops.
  • Ferrara. Ferrara is a splendid city of art, to be enjoyed by walking its streets, its character – this magnificent Renaissance capital – revealed on every corner. Through its glorious past, you can understand the roots of its present.
  • The Este family governed here for three centuries and gave the city the appearance it has today: a uniquely planned city, harmoniously fusing Mediaeval and Renaissance architecture, Europe’s first modern city. It is precisely these characteristics that secured its UNESCO World Heritage status. It’s a peaceful city to wander on foot or by bike, every step re-living the magical atmospheres of the past.
  • Ravenna For mosaic lovers, Ravenna is an earthly paradise. Spread out over several churches and baptisteries around town is one of the world’s most dazzling collections of early Christian mosaic artwork, enshrined since 1996 on Unesco’s World Heritage list. Wandering through the unassuming town centre today, you’d never imagine that for a three-century span beginning in AD 402, Ravenna served as capital of the Western Roman Empire, chief city of the Ostrogoth Kingdom of Italy and nexus of a powerful Byzantine exarchate. During this prolonged golden age, while the rest of the Italian peninsula flailed in the wake of Barbarian invasions, Ravenna became a fertile art studio for skilled craftsmen, who covered the city’s terracotta brick churches in heart-rendingly beautiful mosaics.
  • Padova Though less than an hour from Venice, Padua (Padova in Italian) seems a world away with its medieval marketplaces and hip student population. As a medieval city-state and home to Italy’s second-oldest university, Padua challenged both Venice and Verona for regional hegemony. A series of extraordinary fresco cycles recalls this golden age – including in Giotto’s blockbuster Cappella degli Scrovegni, Menabuoi’s heavenly gathering in the baptistry and Titian’s St Anthony in the Scoletta del Santo. For centuries, Padua and Verona fought for dominance over the Veneto plains. But Venice finally occupied Padua permanently in 1405.
